Crane Rests in Mangrove Forest, Dominican Republic

Lying adjacent to Haiti on the east side of the Hispaniola island, Dominican Republic couldn't have been more different from its conjoined twin. The contrast is truly startling. After a nine-hour bus ride that at times became more harrowing than I would normally prefer, I found Santo Domingo to be a sprawling city equipped with every imaginable Western connivance. From here, the drive north to the quiet hamlet on the outskirts of Sabana de la Mar took a solid four hours, through a maze of twisted dirt roads that lay littered with endless potholes.
